Abstract:

Correspondence, diaries, business records, ledgers, records of court cases and other legal papers, deeds to properties owned in Connecticut and Vermont, cipher books, and other papers, of Judd and Harris family members, residents of Guildhall, Windsor, Middlebury, Shoreham, and Vergennes, Vt. Includes papers of Eben W. Judd (1761-1837), surveyor, landowner, businessman, and civic leader, originally of Waterbury, Conn., who moved to Guildhall in 1786 and to Middlebury ca. 1801 where he developed Middlebury Marble Manufacturing Company; his son-in-law, Lebbeus Harris, Jr. (1794-1837), of Middlebury who became partners with Eben Judd in the Shoreham Black Marble Company (later Shoreham Marble Company), Shoreham, Vt., and built the Judd-Harris House (now the Sheldon Museum) in Middlebury; Judd's brother, Stephen Judd, who left Vermont in 1812; and Harris's brother, Nathaniel Harris, a dentist.
