Abstract:

Pt. 1 (pp. 9-214), "Jüdisches Leben in Emmerich" by Cläre Pelzer, is a detailed and documented chronicle of the Emmerich (Cleve, Lower Rhine) Jewish community. At its height in 1893-94, it numbered 180 Jews; in 1932 there were 95. Describes residential, marital, and occupational restrictions, and the ruinous taxation of the 17th-18th centuries. Traces the struggle for emancipation in the 19th century. In the 1840s, Gilbert Lensing, Landtag deputy from Emmerich, led an unsuccessful campaign to petition the king for Jewish emancipation. Describes the anti-Jewish measures of the Nazi period, including a detailed examination of the events of the "Kristallnacht" pogrom, based on postwar eyewitness accounts and testimony from war crimes trials. Traces the fate of individuals and families. Pt. 2 (pp. 215-365), "Jüdische Emmeriche Bürger, ihre Vor- und Nachfahren und ihre Schicksale", by Herbert Schüürmann, gives an alphabetical list of all known Jewish residents of the town from 1750 through the Holocaust, with biographical details.
