Abstract:

"The juggler" is devoted to the wartime years, charting the calculated and even devious path by which the American President maneuvered support for England before leading his country through the greatest war in history. "The juggler" traces FDR's growing personal ties to Churchill and his relationship with Stalin, while looking at Eleanor's attempt to convince FDR to maintain the principles of the New Deal despite pressures of war. Elected to a fourth term, FDR struggled to maintain his buoyant persona, willfully masking his seriously failing health. Despite his evident ill health, when the President died on April 12, 1945, Americans reacted with shock to the news of the death of the man who had become both friend and father figure.
