Abstract:

This is a multi-title review. Titles include Just Because I'm Latin Doesnt' Mean I Mambo: A Success Guide for Hispanic Americans and American Dream: How Latinos Can Achieve Success in Business and in Life - Given demographic trends showing that the growth of the Latino population in the U.S. is outpacing all other groups eightfold and that the number of Latino-owned businesses nearly tripled from 1987 to 1995, it is frustrating for library users--and librarians--not to be able to find much material that offers guidance to or addresses obstacles faced specifically by Latinos in attaining success in careers and business. Periodicals such as Hispanic Business, Hispanic Times, and Nuestro and Augusto Failde's recent book Latino Success (1996) do make good starting points, and now these two new titles will also help fill the void. Job has 20 years of corporate experience and now conducts workshops and lectures on cultural diversity and change management. He uncovers what he calls unwritten rules and codes and advises how to confront stereotypes. He also considers the conflicts that can arise when trying to maintain a Hispanic identity in the corporate world. Although he counsels pride in one's heritage, he also recommends that it may be better to blend than try to balance--often relying on humor to make points. Included is a short directory of Hispanic professional organizations and employee associations. Sosa founded the largest Hispanic ad agency in the U.S. and now advises major companies on marketing. He discusses Hispanic identity, confronts eight Latino business stereotypes, and identifies the 12 traits of successful Latinos. Sosa also emphasizes the importance of education and the value of networking, and he targets Latino business owners with advice on marketing and negotiating. (The publisher advises that a Spanish-language edition of The Americano Dream will be published simultaneously by Plume.) - David Rouse; 240p-
