Abstract:

The 80-year-old emperor Charlemagne falls for the 16-year-old hostage Gersuind, who is unprincipaled and uninhibited - an incarnation of the Saxon spirit. At last he must realize that he has been neglecting affairs of state while spending time trying to teach virtue to this heathen hussy, and he sends her to a convent. There, she redeems herself; she drinks poison and dies a holy death. Legendarily, Charlemagne did have a concubine or consort named "Gersuinda of Saxon."
