Based on the novel: "Maria Morzeck, oder, Das Kaninchen bin ich", by Manfred Bieler.
Originally released as a motion picture in 1965, it was banned in 1965/1966 in East Germany by officials who labeled it an anti-socialist, pessimistic and revisionist attack on the state for it's sardonic portrayal of the German Democratic Republic's judicial system and exposing the realities of East German society. Its name was eventually adopted to signify all the banned films of 1965-1966, which became known as the "Rabbit Films." It was re-released in 1989/1990 and earned critical praise as one of the most important and courageous works ever made in East Germany.

Abstract:

In communist East Berlin, a 19-year-old "working-class" girl named Maria Morzeck is denied university admission because her brother is in jail for political reasons. The charge against him is very obscure: "agitation to threaten the security of the State." She unwittingly begins an affair with the much older and married judge who passed the harsh sentence on her brother. She is very happy in her new relationship, even after she realizes he is the judge who sentenced her brother to a lengthy prison sentence. After spending the summer in the judge's summer home, Maria begins to question the sentence passed on her brother and eventually confronts the judge with his opportunism and hypocrisy.
