Abstract:

Collection consists of research materials, drafts, galleys and reprints, lectures, and a small amount of correspondence.

The majority of the collection is research notes for the "American College Dictionary" and "The Usage Book." There are the galleys for "Studies in Heroic Legend and Current Speech" edited by Stefan Einarsson and Norman E. Eliason. There is a draft of Malone's unfinished "Historical Sketch of the English Language," articles on Beowulf and Chaucer, and lectures on American speech, Bacon, Beowulf, Chaucer, medieval drama, 17th-century prose, and Germanic mythology. There are three radio addresses given by Malone during World War II on collective security, Japan, and Finland and a commencement speech on college education for women given at the American College for Women in Istanbul.
