Abstract:

Smith focuses on education's key issues, including tenure, "publish or perish," the Ph. D. as "union card," academic fundamentalism, the abandonment of teaching and direct interaction with students in favor of research, and the powerful bonds that tie universities to government and industry through research funding. Page Smith shows the harmful effects of "science consciousness," which has exerted hegemony over the entire academic world. Smith insists upon the necessity of reviving, in secular form, the language in which the "Big Questions" can once more be addressed in the academic world.
