Abstract:

Otani find himself in unfamiliar territory: the world of haute couture that visits Kobe in the form of an international fashion show. Otani's worldly and style-conscious lieutenant, Inspector Kimura, has had more than a passing acquaintance with certain models, but the scale of the operation to be mounted at the Tamahimeden Wedding Hall is an eye-opener even to him. When a colossal chandelier crashes among the visiting dignitaries at the ceremony, it becomes clear that the death threats Otani and his team had discounted as hysterical fantasy could prove all too real. Slowly their investigations reveal that the delicately rigged craft of fashion floats upon very big moey indeed. As the ornated fabrics are peeled away, the torn brocades and discarded silks reveal an ugly world of greed, envy, blackmail and, in hideously apt attire, murder.
