Abstract:

One of a sequence of seven history plays by William Shakespeare dramatizing the Wars of the Roses, during which the English crown was contested across nearly two centuries of murder, intrigue, rebellion, counter-rebellion, and battle. In Richard III, Richard, duke of Gloucester, a self-proclaimed villain, usurps the crown from King Edward IV. When Richard is killed at Bosworth Field, Henry, earl of Richmond, ascends the throne as Henry VII, establishing the Tudor dynasty.
