Abstract:

Koryu, which was given the honor of being opening film at the Seoul Women's Film Festival in 2000, illuminates in a beautiful way the lives of various women, all of whom hail from the director's own home town of Jinhae, located in the Gyeongsang Province of South Korea. Celebrated Korean filmmaker Kim So Young begins the film with her own very personal reflections of her grandmother -- a writer/scribe who penned traditional eulogies for women in her village -- then moves on to interview other women. Those women include, Yu Seung-ah, who now lives in Germany with her English husband; Yu Kyung-ah, a teahouse owner; and Lee Young-jung, a budding filmmaker. What emerges is a fascinating narrative about the lives and experiences of South Korean women past and present.
