Kurt Vonnegut explains his start as a writer, and offers his views on getting published, past writers, and the future for new writers. Nora Ephron, journalist and newspaper reporter, explains her start as a writer and her move from journalism to other types of writing. Tom Wolfe explains the accidental start of his personalized style of reporting, which became famous as "new journalism." He also offers his views on getting published and weighing the advantages of polished prose against the idea of "sandblasting." Pauline Kael, film critic and author, discusses her start as a writer and her views on films and film criticism. John Gardner talks about his start as a writer and his first fifteen years of writing before he sold his first manuscript. John Hawkes explains his methods for writing, his routine when writing, and his belief that writers should live "normal lives."
