This book is a great find. It has a truly unusual perspective on Illinois history because many old newspaper archives from Chicago and Washington, DC were used as primary sources for a period of more than 150 years from 1854 to 2012. The contemporary news articles also help to transport the reader back in time to see the news of Illinois people and events in almost the same way that people back then experienced those events in real time. I also loved reading about all the colorful personalities, previously unknown to me, who helped to make up Illinois history. Finding out interesting tidbits about those Illinoisans made the journey all the more fascinating. I also really enjoyed the author's various amusing anecdotes. For example, I am from Illinois, but I never knew about the "103rd county."
