Abstract:

A native Kansan, Robert Sudlow has an M.F.A. in art from the California College of Arts and Crafts and taught art at the University of Kansas from 1947 until his retirement in June of 1987. He studied painting with Raymond Eastwood, the late Karl Mattern, and the late Albert Bloch at the University of Kansas, André Lhote in Paris, and Richard Diebenkorn in California. At present he is represented by the American Legacy Gallery, Kansas City, Missouri, the Kellas Gallery, Lawrence, Kansas, the Beauchamp Gallery, Topeka, Kansas, and Lyman-Heizer Associates, Northbrook, Illinois. Sudlow's work is in many corporate, private, and public collections throughout the country, including the City Art Museum in St. Louis and the Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha. His paintings have been avidly collected for years. -- from dust jacket.

For many this book will alter how they see Kansas. Robert Sudlow approaches painting as a sort of communion, one that draws the viewer into his meditation upon the reality of nature. His paintings celebrate and exalt the Kansas landscape by making the commonplace luminous, by transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary. No photorealist, Sudlow seeks to capture on canvas the transience of natural events like scudding clouds, blustery winds, melting snow, and waning light. He paints fields, ditches, ponds, dirt roads, hedgerows, streams, hills, and farmhouses. In his work one senses Sudlow's joy in his struggle to fuse the disparate forces of nature and to communicate his sense of the place. A native Kansan, Sudlow has refined that sense through a lifetime of closely observing his environment, and those who share his vision will see Kansas afresh. -- from back cover.
