Tale wagging the dog?

On one level, I enjoyed reading Last Days of Dogtown. I liked the setting. The interwoven stories kept my interest up. But in some ways, it was precious. Not actually the bits about the dogs. I could have used more of those. The character development was not strong. Two characters in particular, Easter...
