Abstract:

Episode 3, The Chicano Wave, continues the story of the rise of Latino music told by a new generation of Mexican-American entertainers, raised on rock and rhythm & blues, including Ritchie Valens, Freddy Fender, Linda Ronstadt, Selena, and more. Through interviews and historical footage, this documentary illustrates how Mexican-Americans across the Southwest created their own distinct musical voices during the second half of the 20th century. Their music would play an important role in the struggle for Chicano civil rights and ultimately propel them from the streets of the barrio to the national stage.
