Abstract:

Laurence Housman was an English author. Born in Worcestershire, the younger brother of poet A.E. Housman, he decided to study art in London with his sister, Clemence, rather than attend Oxford. While working as a book designer, he began publishing stories and poems, and became art critic of the Manchester Guardian. He was also successful writing novels and essays, although he is perhaps best remembered as a playwright. His dramatic cycle, The Little Plays of Saint Francis, was widely produced in Britain, and Victoria Regina, starring Helen Hayes and Vincent Price, was an enormous success in America. His work was consistently clever, stylish, and readable, and he was a popular speaker on literature, politics, and psychology.

The collection consists of three items: letter to Dear sir, 12 May 1917, asserting that his lecture on prison reform was from notes, and he has not written an article on the theme; manuscript poem, "West Chester Hills at Sunrise," undated, fair copy with one correction; poem fragment in three stanzas, undated, headed 3., with verse concerning a parrot and an Aunt.
