Abstract:

This book tells the story of the world's first icebreaker that could make its way through heavy ice. The famous ship enjoyed an incredibly long life of service - 65 years. "Ermak", built in the late 19th century, sailed many times to the high latitudes. She participated in the ice campign of the Baltic Fleet in1918, and helped with the evacuation of the station "North Pole-1" in 1938) and with guiding vessels through ice in the Baltic Sea (1941-45). Included in the book is the famous book of Vice-Admiral S.O. Makarov (1848-1904) "Ermak in ice." Other parts of the the book are by modern experts, who have researched the history of Russian navigation. The authors pay attention not only to the most memorable moments of the ship's long history, but also illuminate obscure events of Ermak's history, such as the undeservedly forgotten last captain of the vessel, Vyacheslav Vladimirovich Smirnov.
