Facsimile of Gen. Robert E. Lee's handwritten order dated 10 Apr. 1865, on sheet 322 x 201 mm, reproducing the blue tint and the watermark of the paper; letterpress pamphlet mounted in portfolio, with title "Farewell to the Army of Northern Virginia" (8 unnumbered pages ; 36 x 13 cm).
Manuscript reproduced from original owned by Forest H. Sweet, of Battle Creek, Michigan, judged to be "an official copy and not merely a 'souvenir.'"
Drawing on pages [4]-[5] of the surrender in Appomattox Court House acknowledged to Chicago Historical Society. It was published in The century illustrated monthly, v. 35 (1887), page 144, "Drawn by W. Taber; based upon the lithograph called 'The dawn of peace' by permission of W.H. Stelle."
