Abstract:

Analyzes the appearance and transformation of the legend of the Wandering Jew (and the symbolism of Ahasuerus) since the ancient period, and its representations in religious legends, folklore, and literature. The identification of Ahasuerus with the Jewish people, both as an antisemitic stereotype and an image of Jewish suffering, developed in the 19th century. Pp. 275-278, "Ahasuerus and the Judenfrage, " survey use of the myth in German antisemitic pamphlets and literature in the 1880s. Pp. 293-302, "Ahasuerus and the Jewish People, " mention the antisemitic representations of the mythical hero in German literature in the first decades of the 20th century.
