Abstract:

Count Lev (Leo) Nikolayevich Tolstoy was a novelist of the realist school who considered the novel a framework for the examination of social and political issues. Grand in scope, breadth, and its vivid depiction of 19th-century Russian life and attitudes 'Anna Karenina' forms a bridge between the realist and modernist novel, using stream-of-consciousness narration to depict Anna's fluid thoughts. Tolstoy's further talents as essayist, dramatist, and educational reformer made him the most influential member of the aristocratic Tolstoy family.
