Since the 9/11 attack on the United States and the Bali bombing, the Muslim community of Cambodia has found itself under strict scrutiny because of its links with foreign Muslim countries. Muslims in Cambodia are mainly from Cham origin and Cham people are strongly related to the Malay world. Malays, especially from Patani and Kelantan, have been very much involved in the teaching of Islam to the Chams. Cham students have been attending Malay Islamic schools in Patani and Kelantan or at home for at least two centuries. Malay ulama are very respected among Muslims in Cambodia. In fact, the Malays are the link connecting the Chams of Cambodia with the rest of the umma. When Muslim fundamentalist movements spread out, their influence reached Cambodia partly through the Malay network. However, although violent radical Islam did appear in Cambodia (but on a very limited scale), most of the exchanges on the religious field between the Chams in Cambodia and the Malays focused only on Islamic studies and have always been peaceful.
