Abstract:

Copy of a letter from the Headmen of the Cherokees, at Highwassey (also spelled Hiawassee, Georgia) to Governor [William] Blount of Tennessee (1790-1795) concerning the sale of Cherokee lands. The Cherokees warn that if whites begin settling the Muscle Shoals (on the Tennessee River in northwest Alabama) the Creeks in the region will spill blood; they refer to information from George Handcock that settlers will soon converge on the Muscle Shoals. The Cherokee leaders indicate their willingness to continue peaceful relations with the whites. Blount was also Superintendent of Indian Affairs in this period, though it is unclear in which capacity the Cherokees wr.
