Abstract:

Wrote about seeing the inauguration of President James Knox Polk. About 25,000 were "out to witness the ceremony of installation, and they paid dearly for their whistle, for the greater part of them were pretty thoroughly drenched with rain ... Some decided to brave the storm of rain that was falling, so unpitiously on their finery, and traipsed along through mud with their fine drapes trailing behind them, wet and muddy up to their knees (for I suppose ladies have knees), others more prudent and philosophical pulled up their fine drapes around their waists, displaying a variety of petticoats, some white, some blue, and some the colour of Joseph's coat."
