Abstract:

Bound catalog (1884) of the Keam Collection of Hopi pottery and letter (Mar. 28, 1893) regarding Edward E. Ayer's Hopi ceramics.

Stephen's 184 leaf typescript catalog, illustrated with pen and ink diagrams, categorizes Hopi pottery production based on historical and mythical accounts of Hopi life and relates pottery designs to religious belief. Stephen's ten-page letter to Keam contains extensive comments of the collection of Hopi pottery assembled by Keam for Edward E. Ayer. It also describes the culture and history of the Hopi people from whom Keam obtained the pots.
