Abstract:

April 14, 1791, letter from John Irwin, then a major in the 4th battalion of the Allegheny County militia who was acting for the county lieutenant, to Pennsylvania governor Thomas Mifflin, regarding the defense of the Pittsburgh-Allegheny County frontier against Indian attacks which followed Gen. Harmar's defeat the previous fall.

Irwing notes the militia strength required to defend the county and the need to obtain arms and ammunition. He also reports that American ally Cornplanter (Seneca chief) and his party of warriors had joined French Creek inhabitants at the fort in Vanango (i.e. Venango) and that hostile action was expected "when the trees get green."
