Abstract:

July 3-4, 1850, letter from Kern in Santa Fe to Samuel George Morton, an eminent Philadelphia physician and naturalist, regarding his activities and interest in the archeology and ethnology of the Southwest.

Kern discusses his preparation of maps of the Pecos region for Lieut. Simpson, his plans to accompany Simpson on a trip to El Paso, his procurement of Indian skulls for Morton's craniology studies, and his opposition to the advocates of New Mexico statehood. Kern comments on the unreliability of various works on the Indians, Simpson's excellent report on the 1849 Navajo expedition, and the disastrous 1848 Frémont expedition. He also promises upon his return from El Paso to send his friend and patron accurate information about the Indians.
