Abstract:

This is an extremely interesting group of letters, written principally to his parents while Hamilton was a student at the University of Göttingen. His intellectual development is the focus of the letters, with much concerning his course of study, student life, as well as entertainment, such as comments on riding at the well-known Göttingen riding school. There are numerous mentions of his professors and their lectures, including Johann Friedrich Blumenbach, Johann Friedrich L. Hausmann, Karl Christian Friedrich Krause, Karl Otfried Müller, and others. There are mentions of his friends, especially Thomas Lovell Beddoes. He traveled on the continent during holidays, and there are letters concerning travel conditions, sights, and mentions of various people (including a meeting with Goethe), while in Dresden, Weimar, Leipzig (he was entertained at the royal court).
