Abstract:

The collection contains letters from Eugène Carrière to artists, art world people. Included is a letter to Lefevre (1890) asking for help in enlarging a photograph to be used in painting a portrait; a letter to Champsaur (1892) discussing the relation of art and life, and the diversity of artistic expression originating from the same poetic source; a letter to Vallette, the director of the "Mercure de France," (1893) regarding a lithograph Carrière is preparing; a letter to Mirbeau (1897) praising his artistic nature; and an appeal to Roll (1899) for support for the Belgian painter de Groux. The remaining letters, of a personal and business nature, are to Lucien Descaves and others.
