Original and carbon copy typed transcripts of letters regarding personal, Indian Agency, and military affairs received by Kit Carson between November 9, 1856 and August 18, 1865, during Carson's tenure as Indian agent and Colonel of the First New Mexico Volunteer Infantry. Correspondents include DeWitt C. Peters, Carson's friend and biographer; Jason L. Collins, Governor of New Mexico Territory and Superintendent of Indian Affairs; Commissioner of Indian Affairs A. B. Greenwood; E. W. Cave, Texas Secretary of State; Brigadier General James H. Carleton; and Captain Albert W. Pfeiffer. A copy of Carson's May 4, 1862 letter to Captain W. I. L. Nicodemus regarding the discharging of Carson's men is also included in the collection. Accompanied by a newspaper clipping on Carson and related notes and essays by former owner Norma Berger.
