Abstract:

Collection consists of letters to Desire Albert Barre and his father, Jean Jacques Barre, members of a family who designed coins, stamps and commemorative medals for the French government, Barre pere as "graveur general des monnais" at the Hotel des Monnais, Paris. Correspondents represent many of the leading painters, sculptors, engravers and architects of the day, including David d'Angers, Hippolyte Flandrin, Eugene Fromentin, Charles Francois Jalabert, Eugene Isabey, Adrien Dauzats, Jean Leon Gerome and Francois Pascal Simon Gerard.

A separate series consists of letters received by Alfred Arago, "directeur des Beaux-Arts," from Ary Scheffer, Jean Victor Schnetz, Benjamin Constant, Cham, Isidore Pils, Jean Francois Millet, Niccolo Bernardo Raggi and others, concerning the Salon and other matters. The relationship between these two groups of letters is unclear.
