Abstract:

Unbound typescript carbon transcriptions of letters written by Frederick William Benteen to Theodore W. Goldin dated 1891 Oct 20-1896 Aug 12, regarding Benteen's army experiences at the Battle of the Little Big Horn, and his opinions of the actions of George Custer, Marcus A. Reno, and other fellow officers. Goldin initiated the correspondence in the course of doing research for articles he wrote about the battle. Transcripts of letters received by Benteen from other individuals interested in Little Big Horn are also included. A typed transcript of a letter dated 1932 Dec 27, from Goldin to E. A. Brininstool, author of The Custer Fight: Captain F. W. Benteen's Story of the Battle of the Little Big Horn (Hollywood, CA: Privately printed by Brininstool, 1933), contains Goldin's comments about Little Big Horn.

A note typed by Brininstool at the bottom of the letter of 1896 Aug 12, states that Brininstool acquired the original letters from Goldin in 1932. Presumably the transcriptions were typed by Brininstool.
