Abstract:

The Lewis Edwin Hahn Papers consist of correspondence to and from Dr. Hahn discussing issues related to his position in the department of philosophy at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, his role as a university administrator, as well as his participation and leadership in professional philosophical organizations including but not limited to the Library of Living Philosophers, The Dewey Project, and The American Philosophical Association. Correspondence also addresses personal matters, philosophical concepts and ideas. Besides correspondence, the papers contain teaching materials, theses, dissertations and other work by Dr. Hahn's students as well as publications, manuscripts, and presentations by Dr. Hahn and by others. Included in the biographical series of this collection are materials pertaining to Dr. Hahn's education, his personal memberships and his stamp collection. Finally, these papers incorporate Dr. Hahn's collection of printed materials including reprints, journals, and books. Notable correspondents include Stephen Coburn Pepper, Jo Ann Boydson, Paul Arthur Schilpp, Charles Tenney, Huston Smith, and Ray Lepley.
