Abstract:

"In 1968, Arthur Ashe stunned the world by becoming the first amateur tennis player to win the U.S. Open. By year's end, he was ranked the No. 1 tennis player in the world. The first male African American ever to play professional tennis, Ashe went on to win thirty-three tournaments. In 1988, Ashe learned that he had AIDS, having been infected with the virus as a result of a blood transfusion following heart surgery. Through his courageous battle with the disease he remained composed and polite to all, and continued to be politically and socially active. He died of AIDS-related pneumonia on February 6, 1993. A teacher, author, and activist, as well as a tennis star, Ashe always reached out to help those around him. He will long be remembered by the millions of people whose lives he touched." -- Page [4] cover.
