Abstract:

Collection consists of ca. 400 prints of varying size but chiefly 7 1/2 x 9 in. on mounts 14 x 11 in., including 52 cyanotypes in a portion of an album and a set of ca. 35 albumen prints depicting lighthouses in Maine in the late 1800s; two brochures for a lighthouse cruise from New York to Maine; two mounted clippings showing a lighthouse; envelopes and photocopies of envelopes giving identifying information about some of the photos; ca. 150 lithographs by Julius Bien ca. 1860 for the U.S. Lighthouse Service, bound in one large volume.

The bulk of this collection appears to be official photographic records of lighthouses primarily along the New England and Middle Atlantic coasts but also including the Great Lakes, Puerto Rico, California, Southern Atlantic states, and overseas. Most of the photographs are identified by structure name, date, photographer, and plate number, but geographic location is not always given. Many pictures are of lighthouse equipment, parts, and the companies that manufacture and sell them. Also pictured are ships that supply lighthouses, photos of the seashore surrounding lighthouses for purposes of documenting beach erosion, lightships, piers, etc. Lithographs show plans, sections, and elevations of lighthouse towers, buoys, and lighthouse equipment.
