Abstract:

Michael Palin crosses the Sahara through sand-seas, along rivers, through oases, and over mountain ranges. In a place characterized by ceaseless travel, from camel caravans to car rallies, Palin's love of people sees him chatting with locals from countries many people know little about. A Line in the Sand chronicles the first leg of his journey, from Morocco to Mauritania. After exploring Tangier and Fez and visiting Berber communities, he crosses the Atlas Mountains into the desert where he meets exiled Western Saharans in Algerian refugee camps and takes the iron ore train from Zouerat to Chinguetti.
