Abstract:

Allen Ginsberg class on the Beat Generation. This class deals with letters from Gary Snyder to Lew Welch. Ginsberg reads and discusses a number of the letters. The class discusses Snyder in Japan and learning Zen. The class then discusses Philip Lamantia and a number of his poems are read aloud, including Hermentic bird and Intersection. Ginsberg reads phrases aloud that highlight the visual style and surrealist quality of Lamantia's work. Ginsberg continues by reading a number of poems by Lamantia, including Morning light song, The night is a space of white marble, There is this distance between me and what I see, I have given fair warning, and Blue grace. The class talks about Lamantia's relationships with poets like Michael McClure and Ginsberg, and his talent as a writer.
