Abstract:

This is a true story. It tells of the life of a little boy who lived in a hill country village in Texas in the year 1876. His father was the deputy sheriff. The boy, Arnold, carried the meals to the men in jail, so his father made Arnold the "Little Deputy." The prisoners all like the Little Deputy. One of the men in jail gave him a toy pistol. The little Deputy had a cat as a constant companion. He named his cat "Tom Bom Mita." A new sheriff is elected. The Little Deputy's heart is sad for fear he will have to give back his gun, and that he will no longer have the title of "Little Deputy.".
