|Notes:||"This work was issued as presidential campaign material and went into an unknown number of printings, of which several variants exist. The variants were caused by printing from multiple plates , mixed sheets, corrections and changes in the text, a combination of all three factors. The result is a bibliographical morass. ... BAL considers an absolute sequence a near-impossibility. ... Add to the above the fact that the bindings vary, as do the imprints, and it becomes quite clear that the number of variants is large."--BAL.
All of the variant imprints begin with Follett, Foster & Co. (who entered the copyright), to which are added publishers in various cities, in various combinations, except for a small number of copies with imprint: New York : W.A. Townsend & Co. ; Columbus, O. : Follett, Foster & Co.
Some but not all printings have stereotyper's and printer's statements on t.p. verso: "Stereotyped at the Franklin Type Foundry, Cincinnati. Printed by Applegate & Co., Cincinnati." These correspond to two different impositions: the earlier plates, with the statements, are in 8s and 4s; the later plates, without them, are in 8s, and include 8 additional pages at the end containing advertisements. The later plates, which appear to have been made from the earlier ones, include corrections to a passage on p. 74 and add a footnote on p. 75, though p. 33 and 46 reflect the uncorrected state of the earlier plates (see BAL; this is Wessen's "second (complete) edition", corresponding to BAL's variant E; neither notes the absence of the printing statements nor the variant signatures).
Collation (with stereotyper and printer on t.p. verso): ⁴ 2⁸ 3-34⁸/⁴ [$1 signed]; 204 leaves, pp. [1-3] 5 7 [8-10] xi-xv [xvi] 17-406 [407-408 (blank)] (internal unnumbered pages in main text not noted). "Wigwam" illustration on p. .
Collation (without stereotyper and printer on t.p. verso): ⁸ 2-26⁸ [$1 signed; leaf 20 signed '15']; 208 leaves, pp. [1-3] 5 7 [8-10] xi-xv [xvi] 17-406 [407-416] (internal unnumbered pages in main text not noted). "Wigwam" illustration on p. ; publisher's advertisements of Follett, Foster & Co. on p. -. The anomalous signature 15 on p. 319 is a leftover in the plate from the printing of the truncated 170-page issue (Wessen 9).
Some copies include an errata slip inserted between p. 74 and 75, relating to the text corrected in the later set of plates.
Illustrations: Two steel engraved portraits by J.C. Buttre after photographs by Mathew Brady; full-page wood engraving, "The Republican wigwam at Chicago", on p. or .
