Cover title: Life of Abraham Lincoln.
Contains only one Lincoln speech ("Speech delivered at Cincinnati, Ohio, September, 1859", p. 115-153) and none by Hamlin.
Some copies add to the imprint: Cincinnati : Rickey, Mallory & Co.
"Stereotyped at the Franklin Type Foundry, Cincinnati. Printed by Applegate & Co., Cincinnati."--T.p. verso.
A preliminary partial issue, consisting of the first 12 sheets of the complete edition (through p. 144, including its table of contents and list of illustrations) as printed in 8s and 4s, followed by the conclusion of the Lincoln speech and the life of Hamlin printed from stereotype plates of the complete edition with modified pagination and signatures, as well as an additional concluding paragraph on p. 170. It was not, as Wessen states, printed directly from type then used to make the plates; nor is the complete edition in any sense an "extended edition" relative to this one, as described in BAL.
Collation: 1⁴ 2⁸ 3-14⁸/⁴ [$1 signed; missigning 13₈ as '14', 14₁ unsigned, missigning 14₄ as '15']; 84 leaves, pp. [1-3] 5 7 [8-10] xi-xv [xvi] 17-153 [154 (blank)] 157-170 [=168]. The construction of the final two gatherings is as given by BAL. The plates may well have been originally modified so as to include the half title "Life and speeches of Hannibal Hamlin" as p. - (leaf 13₆), requiring a singleton leaf 15₁ at the end; but the half title being inappropriate for this issue (it contains no speeches by Hamlin), the printing was simplified by omitting that leaf, and imposing the two gatherings as 8 and 4 leaves respectively, without further correcting the signatures and pagination. The signature '15' reappears on p. 319 (recto of leaf 20₈) in later stereo plates made for printing the complete edition in 8s; it appears not to be found in any copies from the earlier printing(s) in 8s and 4s, an indication, together with the nature of the preliminaries, that the printing of gatherings 13-14 for this issue did not take place prior to one or more printings in full of the complete edition, of which the binding, and therefore publication, was delayed (see Wessen for details).
This issue does not include the two engraved portraits; in some copies, p. is blank, in others it contains the "Republican wigwam" illustration, indicating, along with the uncorrected states of p. 33 and 46, that sheets 1-12 were from the earliest printing, commenced before the decision to include the illustration.
Issued in printed wrappers, with portrait of Lincoln on front cover, and on inside front cover an advertisement for "the debates in Illinois, between Stephen A. Douglas and Abraham Lincoln" (i.e. Political debates between Hon. Abraham Lincoln and Hon. Stephen A. Douglas), noting "20,416 sold".
