Justice Breyer spoke with Dean David F. Levi and Walter Dellinger about his distinguished legal career, influences, and philosophy. Prior to taking his seat on the Supreme Court on Aug. 3, 1994, he served on the on the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, and as its chief judge from 1990 to 1994. He also has served as a member of the United States Sentencing Commission and the Judicial Conference of the United States, as a special assistant to the assistant U.S. attorney general for antitrust, an assistant special prosecutor of the Watergate Special Prosecution Force, and as special counsel and chief counsel to the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee.
