Abstract:

In the early 20th century a group of Colombian artists inspired by the Mexican muralist masters started illustrating the social reality of the common and rural people instead of portraying the bourgeoisie. While the Mexican artists became international cultural icons their Colombian counterparts were after an initial recognition, consigned to oblivion. Author Padilla Peñuela rediscovers "Los Nacionalistas", a group of men and women artists largely from the Andean and Santanader regions and whose large production of sculptures were characteristic for their nationalist message. Members included: Rómulo Rozo, Luis Alberto Acuña, Ramón Barba, Hena Rodríguez, Josefina Albarracín, José Domingo Rodríguez, Julio Abril, Miguel Sopó and José Horacio Betancur. These artists were founders of the modern vanguard in Latin America. The book is divided into three parts: The modern vanguard just mentioned; the second part present the six sculptors in the 1930s and 1940s and new tendencies and the final part on the emerging concepts beginning in 1955 that were defended by Marta Traba.
