Abstract:

Holograph manuscript logbook, written by James P. Arthur, ship master, containing distinct logs for voyages of the ships California and Thomas H. Perkins. The California sailed between Monterey, San Pedro, and San Diego, 1845 Oct 29-Nov 18, lay in port in San Diego, 1845 Nov 19-1846 Feb 8, and returned to its home port of Boston, Massachusetts, Feb 9-Jun 24, with a cargo of hides.

The Thomas H. Perkins left New York on 1846 Sep 26, transporting Colonel Jonathan D. Stevenson and his regiment of New York Volunteers, their families, and supplies to California for service in the Mexican War. The log describes incidents of the voyage and Arthur's interactions with the soldiers, laying in port in Rio de Janeiro, Nov 22-28, and disembarkment from the Thomas H. Perkins and other ships at Yerba Buena (San Francisco), 1847 Mar 6-Apr 30. The ship departed for San Diego and Manila on 1847 May 1. Tipped in is a TLS regarding the logbook, from Thomas P. Martin, Archivist, Harvard Commission on Western History, to Mary Wheelwright, a former owner, dated 1917 Apr 24.
