Single issue of a weekly periodical which ran 1-21 6Aug-24Dec1719 as Thursday's journal, then London journal, 22-999 26Dec1719-17Mar1744.-- Leads off with letter recalling conditions at the time of the 1688 revolution, subscribed "Britannicus" [Hoadley?]; includes foreign and domestic news (e.g., markets, death of Kneller, translation of Hoadley to Salisbury, Lord Mayor of London's oath taking ceremony), adverts. (chiefly remedies, books)--Woodcut heading includes view of London/Thames, arms of Geo. I; fame factotum with sun, moon, earth, stars, subscribed "FHf" (i.e. Francis Hoffman fecit).
KU-S copy is publisher's file copy, endorsed at head by John Pain, Register of Pamphlets, "Stamp Office Lincolns Inn Novr 7. 1723-- Entered according to the Statute Containing one sheet and half of paper the Duty three Shillings ... £0:3:0 No.304" and at foot "Recd. Novr. 7. 1723 Three Shills. ... for Recr. Genll. p[er] D Price". From the library of Henry Temple, 1st Viscount Palmerston, who acted as Walpole's agent in the manipulation of newspapers. This MS receipt shows that the paper, printed on a sheet & a half, paid the 3s pamphlet duty on the entire edition & avoided the penny-per-issue stamp tax levied on papers printed on one sheet. The LJ had only recently been converted ("bought") from a strong opposition paper (printing, for example, Cato's letters) to a government organ, controlled by Walpole.
Description: 6 p. : ill., orn. ; 36 cm.
Other Titles: London journal (London, England : 1719)
Thursday's journal
