Abstract:

Gilbert exhibited a sure hand in her early novels, such as The Leavetaking, at blending the nuances of an era and the romantic culpabilities of her characters with a whisper of suspense. She does so again in this tale of a young woman named Hannah who grows up adoring her beloved sister-in-law, Zilla, only to learn that an awful secret haunts her past. The assumptions of Zilla's guilt by her spouse and sister-in-law are deepened and manipulated by a placid-faced, scheming foundling whose relationship to Zilla is of a more insidious nature than anyone suspects. Throughout, Hannah remains the innocent, uncovering almost inadvertently the treachery and secrets that lie hidden within the most ordinary of God-fearing, Victorian households. Well-plotted, uniquely peopled romantic fare.
