Abstract:

No place to hide (on this rarely seen pilot): Colonists John and Maureen Robinson, their three children, and assistant Don West leave earth for Alpha Centauri on a century-long flight aboard spaceship "Gemini 12." Knocked off course by a meteor storm, the expedition crashes on an unknown world and the castaways explore their new home.

The reluctant stowaway: In this re-edited pilot, Dr. Zachary Smith is trapped aboard the ship, now called "Jupiter 2," while programming the ship's robot to sabotage the mission. Before Don immobilizes the robot, the vessel enters hyperdrive and leaves the galaxy, becoming Lost in Space. With enemy agent Smith aboard, the Robinsons' journey (reduced to 5 1/2 years in this verson) is more hazardous than ever. It is his weight that throws the ship off course, and his sabotage that turns the robot into a destructive menace for this and the next few episodes. John Robinson, making repairs outside the ship, drifts helplessly into space in the series' first cliffhanger.
