Jennie Louise Blanchard Bethune (1856-1913) was America's first professional woman architect. This study describes and analyzes her training, her commissions, her clients, and her relationship to the professionalization of architecture in the context of the social, economic, and technological changes that transformed Buffalo, New York, as well as most American cities, between 1880 and 1905.

This study describes and analyzes her training, her commissions, her clients, and her relationship to the professionalization of architecture in the context of the social, economic, and technological changes that transformed Buffalo, New York, as well as most American cities, between 1880 and 1905.
