Abstract:

Essays, diaries, printed articles, published and unpublished photographs, 16mm movie, videotape, photoessays, and other papers, reflecting Aigner's photojournalism career in Europe (1925-1939) and in the U.S. (1939-1947), and as a photographer in the U.S. (1955-1982). European subject matter includes photoessays on pre-World War II politics and national elections in London and Paris; the heads of state of various European countries; pre-World War II conferences in Stresa, Italy (1935) and Geneva and Lausanne, Switzerland (1932); Berlin Olympics (1936); celebrities, artists, and entertainers in performance, at work, or interviewed; candid street photography in several European cities, in the gardens, parks, markets, etc.; and documentation of the styles of the times including cityscapes and new construction.

American subject matter includes non-war related photoessays, chiefly in New York, N.Y., relating to local and national politicians and elections, youth conferences, celebrities in support of the war effort, victory corps, parades, Randalls Island baseball teams, and daily life in the city penitentiary on Rikers Island; music in the U.S., including essays on the National Music Camp, Yehudi Menuhin, and other musicians; candid street photography of New York City night and day, its parks, stores, schools, and people; a series on Harlem in the 1930s; and a portfolio on Albert Einstein.
