This is a Hopwood Award winner published by Dodd, Mead.  It is the story of a young French Canadian girl who is the eldest child of a French Canadian family.  Her father wanted a son and when Lucien's mother dies, he arranges a marriage for  her with a rich older farmer. The story is not one of a predictable life and has much emotion.

The novel was very well received and earned praise in reviews in the New York Times, the Saturday Review and many other newspapers.

Unfortunately the author died quite young after producing a second book "Not Without Honor"

Vivian also was selected a young author and invited to Breadloaf.
