Abstract:

Ludwig II, King of Bavaria, his famous castles and the mysterious circumstances of his death, have inspired a lot of filmmakers throughout the ages. This DVD set contains newly restored versions of the two surviving silent films about Ludwig II. Rolf Raffe's 'Das Schweigen am Starnbergersee' (The Silence at the Starnberg Lake), focuses on the conflict between the King and his family, while Wilhelm Dieterle's 'Ludwig der Zweite' (Ludwig II: King of Bavaria), describes how the King changed in becoming a madman. As a consequence, the film was severely censored and forbidden for screenings in Bavaria. Christian Rischert's documentary 'Im Ozean der Sehnsucht' (In the Ocean of Longing), throws light on the historical background and traces the thoughts of Ludwig II, by visiting his galleries, castles and artificial grottos.
